As part of the efforts to boost foreign trade, Mexico has sought to promote the different border crossings it has in the country, such as the Colombia border bridge, located in the municipality of Anáhuac, Nuevo León, which has had a constant growth. This has been active for 25 years, however it is until a few years ago that several factors have made the crossing begin to gain strength among the business community with exports to the United States continuously seeking ways to be more agile in processes, be faster and above all be sure.

According to the CODEFRONT, in Puente Colombia, there are up to 12,000 daily crossings carried out, serving the aerospace, food, high technology, auto parts and consumer goods, household appliances, e-commerce, chemical, and sirerurgical sectors, among others. DICEX has a 62,000-square-foot controlled warehouse, 50 loading and unloading platforms, 20 loading and unloading platforms for refrigerated and frozen storage, a yard with capacity for 300 trailers, more than 200 employees, and logistics, storage services and distribution, customs and transportation agency services, IT, E-commerce and value-added services such as handing, labeling and fumigation.

And you may ask, what limited the growth of this crossing before? The reality is that the main factor for which the bridge was not used was because it was perceived as unsafe, says Hugo González, General Director of the Corporation for the Development of the Border Zone of Nuevo León (Codefront), although he explained that security was reinforced. The number of crossings increased 32% in 2017 against 2016, this was due not only to the improvement in safety but also to the operational stoppages of the crossing through Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, due to natural phenomenon that damaged its infrastructure; likewise, the Colombia Bridge had an increase in crossings due to the diffusion strategy implemented by Codefront. They started to personally take 150 companies in 2017 so that they knew about it and knew about its advantages.

It was also possible that passenger used the bridge to visit the United States, closing last year with the transfer of 15 thousand people; in addition to that, a diversification of merchandise was observed, when transiting dangerous, oversized cargo, containers, perishables and light loads, mainly. The crossing through Colombia takes place between 12 and 18 minutes, thanks to the coordination with the Customs.

Another factor that led to the growth of the crossing through Colombia by the United States was that the Texas Tag, the toll paid for the use of State Highway 255, which connects the border bridge with Interstate 35, on the US side, was eliminated. The elimination of that quota made the bridge more competitive.

An important point to mention is that security in the supply chain is important for the use of the border port, the process to obtain the OAS (Authorized Economic Operator) certification has already begun and it has already been around 60% progress in the 11 SAT standards to obtain it. Currently it is the only port to have the ISO-28000 security in the supply chain, which is endorsed every year; this is very important, because the companies increasingly seek to work with secure companies.

Colombia Bridge is going to be the fourth port to have joint inspection in Mexico, the merchandise is checked on the American side, if it were done on the Mexican side it would be an office. Another project underway at this site is to digitize and a given step is the reduction of cash in the booths, but it seeks to have a mobile application that can geo-locate all types of units that cross the bridge, but only in Mexican territory .

As you can see, the Colombia bridge is very important for our country’s foreign trade, and that is why DICEX is present at this point supporting hundreds of companies in their processes of import, export, review, packaging and the necessary services so that the merchandise arrives in time and form as agreed.
